SENSATIONAL SHOOTING CASE AT PORT MELBOURNE.
A sensational shooting ca?e occurred on the American ship Earl of Grenfield, lying afc the Port Melbourne pier. Captain W. H. Copp is accompanied by his wife and two children. Ab Liverpool he shipped Henry Abbotfc for the round voyage as cook. Abbott demanded to be paid off .at Vancouver, and struck the captain in the street, for which iie was imprisoned ten days. On arrival at Melbourne he became importunate. This evening, after stroilincr on the jetty he went on board, and proceeded to tlie poop, where the captain was standing. He demanded the balance of his money and his discharge. Thus was refused, and he was ordered off. Ad vancing within six feet of the captain, he drew a revolver and fired. The shob struct the captain obliquely in the chest, and glanced off, leaving severe bruises. The captain ran to the cabin for a pistol. His wife hearing the shot, hurried down the companion way, pushing her children before her. Abbott tired a second shot at her, jusb missing her head, bub he fired so close that bhe discharge blackened her eye. Abbobb put up the revolver and went ashore. He was subsequently arrested.
