PERILOUS BALLOON ADVENTURE AT BALLARAT.
Prof erg or Bartholomew Severely
Injured
On Saturday, December 29fch, at Ballarafc, Bartholomew, the aeronaut, had a perilous descent in his parachute, his sensational performance taking place immediately after the baseball match on the Eastern Oval. He made an ascent from the Eastern Oval, the wind at the time blowing steadily from the northward into the ciby. Professor Bartholomew ascended all right to a height variously estimated at from 2,000 to 4,000 feet, performing thrilling feats connected with the parachute from the balloon successfully. He descended at what appeared to be terrible speed. The parachute expanded fully, but. still the drop was a very fast one, the parachute travelling righb into the heart ot the city. He fell upon the roof of a shed at the rear of the Buck's Head Hotel, about 500 yards from the Oval, and struck his legs against the edge of the roof with considerable violence. The iron cut into both legs, making very severe wounds, the left leg below the knee being badly lacerated, and the bono injured, while the right leg was severely torn above the knee. Jt was some little time before he could bo gob into a conveyance and removed to tiie hospital, where his injuries were dressed. Ho was then taken to Craig's Hotel, where he has his quarters. Ifc is feared that his injuries will necessitate his retirement for some little time. Hie gear wa.s secured safely. Professor Bartholomew will stay in Ballarafc for some days.
