Further particulars of the accident at Fairfax show that the deceased Cornelius Courhlan was a rabbiter in the employ o*' the Government, and was out shooting with his brother Willuun in the bush behind the Fairfax Hotel. Cornelius sat down on a tussock to icst, and William carrying hit* loaded gnn approached the spot with the intention oi' following his example ; when within a few yards of Cornelius, VVilliam stumbled and fell, the gun went oft and Cornelius turned his head quickly in the direction of his brother when he heard a noise caused by his fall, and received the full charge in his fuce and forehead, and was instantly killed. Although William escaped without physical injury, the contents of the gun merely damaging a portion of his clothing, ho received a severe mental shock, and his rea-'on has been temporarily impaired. The intelligence was ufc once telegraphed to two other brothers who are residents in Dunedin, and who came South by special train, arriving afc Invercargill late on Saturday night, and leaving for Fairfax on horseback.
