VOLUNTEER CONCERT.

An excellently arranged programme was presented at the Volunteer Concert given in the City Hall last evening. The object of the concert was to provide funds for sending representatives to the Centennial Meeting of tho Victorian Rifle Association, and judging by the crowded state of the building, the proceeds should amount to a respectable sum. The concert was under the patronage of Captain Clayton and officers of H.M.s. Diamond, Lieu tenantColonel Shepherd, and officers of the various volunteer companies.. The stag. was neatly decorated. Selections wer. played by the Artillery Band, which contributed the " Volunteer Review," and by the Garrison Band, which played " Crown of Gold," both items being very well rendered. The programme included .- —Song, " The Old Guard," by Mr Charter; song, "Golden Anchor," Miss C. Knight; song, " Death of Nelson," Mr T. M. Jackson. Mr Jackson was encored, and gave in response "Let Me Like a Soldier Fall." The duet "Love and War" was excellently rendered by Messrs A. L. Edwards and T. Charter, and Miss J. Knight contributed an operatic selection. Mr A. L. Edwards sang "The Young Brigade," and the first part of the concert concluded with a quartette, " Soldier's Love," by the Grafton Orpheus Club, the latter item being encored. Afber tho interval Mr Ferriday sang " Maid of Athens," and Mr Burt gave a comic song with considerable (-access. Mr H. Birdsall sang "He's All Right When You Know Him," which was immensely funny, and in response to a recall he gave another comic item entitled, " Only One." Seaman Hughes danced a sailors' hornpipe and was encored, and Mr Worrall contributed, the song, "Three Beggars." During tho evening the Onehunga Rifle Volunteers wenb through bayonet exercise, the Auckland Naval Artillery performed cutlass drill, the Auckland City Guards, dumb company drill and the A Battery Artillery field gun drill. The entertainment, which on the whole was a pronounced success, concluded with the National Anthem.
