Bluff, Friday. Captain Carey, of the Rotomahana, noticed distress signals when passing Dog Island this morning. He reported the matter to the Harbour Board, who sent the

tug out to ascertain the cau=e. It was found that the fishing smack Nelly was wrecked last Tuesday morning several miles off Dog Island. During a heavy gale a sea struck her, carrying away the rudder and breaking the deck in. James Young, the master, an unman ied man, was washed off and drowned. The other men—John Young and James Duncan—were rescued by the lighthouse-keeper, who observed the accident, and pluckily put off in an open boat, risking his own life.
