Messrs Autiiuk and Bijddlk's Weekly Report,—lt has been a busy week in all departments. The supply of produce has been below the average. There has been a demand for much more of many kinds, particularly for good bacon and hams, Butter and cheese : Good prices have been obtained. Fruit has sold at good prices, not a large supply of local. Poultry have brought fair prices. Pigs sold well. Household effects have moved off freely at extremely good prices; several pianos have been sold ad prices varying from £12 to £38 10s each. Nine auction sales have been held, the whole being well attended. On Monday a pawnbroker's sale, at the mart, of unredeemed pledges, etc., from Mr J. line, pawnbroker. It passed off most successfully. There have been four sales of household furniture and effects, pianos, &c. : On Monday, at the residence of Mrs Eyre, Victoriastreet ; on .Tuesday, at Mrs Perrow's residence, Grey-street; on Wednesday, at the Mart; and on Thursday, at the resilience of the late Colonel Lyon, Park Road, oil' Grafton Road, at which there was a crowded attendance, smart competition, and high prices were obtained. There have been three sales of poultry, produce, fruit, &c., at the mart—viz., on Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. Owing to the state of the weather, the supply on Friday was much smaller than usual. The following are the lowest and highest prices obtained :—Fiji fruit: Bananas, ljd to l|d ; pineapples, lOd to Is 3d per dozen ; oranges, 6s 6d to 6s 9d per case; nocoaauts, 4s 3d to 8s 3d ; Hobart apples, 4-3 co 8s a case ; local apples, l£d to Z\ alb ; lemons, s^l to Is 4d a doz ; porsimons, 9M ; passion fruit, 4d ; fowls, Is to Is lOd ; chicks, 7d to lid ; Plymouth rocks (young), Is 4d ; light Brahmas (tine), 4s 6d ; silver Hamburg's, Is 6d to 2s 3d ; Cochins, lioudans (young), Is 4d ; geese, 3s 6d to 4s ; no ducks ; turkeys, 2s 6d to 3s 2d ; canaries, 2s to 7s 6d ; pigs, large, 14s, small, 4s 3d to 10s; local potatoes, £2 5s to £3; pumpkins, Is 9d to 2s ; Oamaru potatoes, £2 17s 6d to £3 (sacks free); carrots, Is 2d to Is 4d ; onions, Jd to gd; mangolds, 9d to lOd bacon, 2d to 6^d ; hams, 6£d to 8d ; butter, fresh, iv pats, superior Devonshire at 14|d par lb ; salt butter, 3.|d to 7;j;d— none firstclass ; cheese, 2d to 4;J;d ; eggs, Is ; honey, 5.', d, in small tins ; fowl wheat (broken), la 9d ; bran, 5s ; maize, 3s 4d in small lots ; groceries at fair prices. Mr Alex Aitkcn's report for the past week runs as follows :—A fair business, has been done. Full supplies have been received, and most sold. Friday's sale was largely attended, but some parts of the day competition was rather dull. Fresh butter shows a decline in value. Eggs: Late rates were fully maintained. Bait butter: All the prime quality to hand was privately placed at 9£d to 91d, and more might have been sold ; inferior quality was not all sold, owing to the fall in fresh butter. The previous high prices of salt cannot be expected much longer, and a slight fall might be expected. Our Wellington telegrams announce that Mr J. M. Geddis, of the Star literary staff, has been appointed to the vacancy on the "Hansard " staff. Mr Geddis has been connected with the press of this city since his boyhood, and for the past ten years has been a valued member; of the Star staff. He is one of the most capable shorthand writers in the colony. Mr Geddis takes up his duties on '"Hansard" at once. The numerous friends of Mr Geddis will join with us in wishing him every success in his new sphere of duty.
