POLICE COURT—THIS DAY.
(Before Mossra W. Duncan and W. Crowther, Justices.)
Straying Horse; —Luke Webber was charged with allowing his horse to stray in Grey-street and was tined 5s and costs. Illegally Pawning. — Emanuel Oliver was charged1 with 4 illegally pawning one gold watch, value £10, the property of Cecilia Gill, on the Bth of June.—Mr W. J. Napier appeared for the accused.— Sergt.-.Major Pratt stated that he must ask for a remand in this case, as the prisoner was only arrested yesterday.—Mr Napier asked that bail might be allowed.—Sergt.Major Pratt objected, as there were several other charges pending against the accused. He said that Oliver was the proprietor of the American Watch Repairing Company, and that the watch was given to the prisoner for the purpose of being repaired. It was ultimately recovered at the pawn shop, and as it was thought that there were other articles that had been similarly dealt with it would tend to defeat the ends of justice if the prisoner was admitted to bail.—Mr Napier spoke at some length tn support of the application, contending that he had a right to be allowed bail.—Sergeant-Major Pratt said he would give evidence upon the matter.—Detective Herbert deposed that upon the arrest of the prisoner yesterday three complaints had been given him of similar offences. He was in a position to swear that two more informations would be laid against the prisoner within an hour.—The Bench decided to remand the prisoner until Tuesday next, and also refused to grant bail.—Mr Napier gave notice that next Tuesday he would apply to the Bench for a further remand in order that the accused might get bail and assist in the preparation cf his defence. Alleged Incendiarism.—Alexander Duncan appeared on remand to answer to the charge of having wilfully and maliciously set fire bo a shed at Kohimarama School on the 6th of June.—Sergeant-Major Pratt applied for a remand, as Mr Hogan, their chief witness, was unable to attend owing to injuries sustained at the fire.—Mr F. Earl appeared for the accused, and objeoted to the remand. He said that the boy had already been incarcerated in gaol for one week for this charge, of which he had not the slightest doubt that he was absolutely innocent. There were no facts, connecting the boy with the offence, and he must a3k that the boy be dismissed if the police were not prepared to go on with the case. If the police wanted him again they could easily get him, as the boy was simply going back to his old employer. There was no fear of him leaving the country.—After some consideration the Bench decided to release the boy on his own recognisance of £20.—The case was remanded until Monday next. Breaking Out. .— William Anderson Grombio was charged with breaking out of the Thistle Hotel and taking therefrom two bottles of liquor, value 15s.—Mr W. J. Napier appeared for tho accused and applied for a remand until Wednesday.— Sergeant-Major Pratt objected, as he had all bia witnesses ready and was prepared to go on with this case. — The Bench granted the remand, the previous bail being enlarged.
