OBITUARY.
Fairfax Johnson, a settler of Tau,ranga, died recently of cancer. He had been in the.colony since 1826. Thq Rev. David Walker^ Church pf England clergyman, who recently arrived at Dunedin from'the home country for the benefit of his health, lias died in the hospital from typhoid fever. An old resident, who came put to Nelson early in the forties, died on Jan. }I—-Mrs Ottersen, mother of the Clerk of Bills, House of Representatives. The deceased lady, who waii agfpcj Oft, had a largo circle of friends in Nelson, Marlborough, Canterbury, and Wellington. Mr Peter Johnstone, well-known in Auckland, died in the Hospital on Dec. 10. He was injured in the Cambria mine twelve months ago, and has been paralysed ever since, though he lingered until this morning. He was sergeant in the ■ 72nd Highlanders, and 3erved in the Crimea, in which he distinguished himself and gained a medal and clasps. He also took part at the Indian Mutinjr, and afterwards came to New Zealand, where he served in the Maori War. Upon the, restoration of peace he took up a residence at the Thames shortly after the opening of the gqldfields, follpvying the occupation of miner. He was captain of No. 1 Company of Thames' Scottish Volunteers until its voluntary disabandmont, and was in cotnmah(£k>i-*--the Scottish Contingent to Parihaka. ; -He was member of Sir Walter Scott L'pdge of Freemasons, and was unj versalty r-espected.l Mrs J.. Wrjght, an old resi4ptit of Auckland, died after a short illness, qn. the 24th January. • Deceased ladyj accompanied by her husband, arrived Jiar© in the ship Lord AViUiam, Bentiok in 1849. She leaves to mourn. her loss six growi}-up sons and a number ofgrandcliildren.'-
