NEWTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The fortnightly meeting of the Newton Borough Council was hold last evening when there wero present:—The Mayor (Mr Warnock), Councillors Faukler, Lee, Ambury, Casey, Donald, Riggs, Boyd, and Garrett. The minutes of the last meeting wero read and confirmed.
Engineers' Report. — Messrs Boylan and Lundon reported re the roads down Cox's Creek. Tho engineers gave four estimates of the cost of the road, viz., £166 12s 6d, £107 10s, £125, and £170. — Considerable discussion ensued on the report. It was resoived, "Thatthe work bo curried out according to the engineers' estimate providing that the City Council make the road on their side of the creek, and that bhe ratepayers in the vioinity contribute £80 instead of £50." The Town Clerk was instructed to write to the City Council asking them to construct their, portion of the road.
Water Supply l —The Mayor declared that the votes polled at the poll taken last week were 116 for and 3 against the loan for the water supply beiug raised. The engineer (Mr Boylan) was present, and laid the plans and specifications on the table, and answered several questions in reference to them. A letter was then read from Messrs Boylan and Lundon, applying for the position of Borough Engineers, their terms to be 5 per cent, over £100 and 7$ per cent, under £100. The appointment was then made, and the engineer instructed to call for tenders bo be returned on December 21st, the first advertisement to appear on Tuesday, the 6th December. Office Hours. —On the motion of Cr. Ambury, seconded by Mr Garrett, it was resolved," That the Council meet at 8 p.m. instead of 7 p.m. until further notice." Dog Registrar.—lt was decided that Mr Boyes's appointment as dog registrar be rescinded, and that the borough ranger be appointed. Election of Mayor,-The Returning Officer, Mr J. Currie, informed the Council thab Francis James Jones had been duly elected Mayor for the Borough of Newton, he being the only candidate nominated. P.OSE-HTRKET CONTRACT.—The following tenders for the works in Rose and adjacent streets were opened : £128 lis 6d, Richard T. Hill ; £97 16s 6d, G. Knight; £94 17s 6d, Thoy. Smart and Co; £95 15s lid, James Berry and Co.'; £83 16s Bd, Matthew Poland; £99 19s 9d, Benjamin Berry. It was decided that Matthew Poland's tender be received, and that the two next lowest tenders be retained until the signing of the contract.
Correspondence. — Thomas Morrow, Secretary of the Arch Hill Road Board, wrote complaining of the conduct of the borough ranger, who had on the 31st ult., while driving cattle to the pound, ridden for some distance on the footpath. It was decided that tho Town Clerk bo instructed to write to the Road Board stating that the Council was not responsible for the actions of the ranger, and that they must deal with him as any ordinary trespasser. Thos. Smart wrote, drawing attention to the inconvenience contractors were put to by having plans and specifications for contracts lying at the Council offices, which are only open from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on five nights in the week.—Cr. Ambury gave notice of motion," That at the next meeting of the Council the resolution passed at the last meeting in reference to this matter be rescinded."
