PARNELL BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The ordinary meeting of the above body was held last evening in the Corporation Offices. Present:—The Mayor and Coun_ cillors Gay, McKenzie, McLachlan, Dewes, Savage and Gilmour. Correspondence.— The letters received were read and dealt with as follows:—From a number of tradesmen and horse-owners, asking the Council to take steps to remove the loose stones from the roads.— Letter received, the Mayor stating that the matter had already been attended to. From Messrs Hesketh and Richmond, forwarding legal opinion as to Mr Comiskey's application for right-of-way. It was to tho effect that ac it was nob a street or private street or footway within the meaning of the Act, the question of width did nob arise, and it was not open to the public, and the Council had full power to give the permission asked for, subject bo such conditions on the points of width, entrance, etc., as the Council might think fit. The application had been referred to the borough solicitors for their opinions, and this was tho substance of their reply, and under these circumstances the permission for the right-of-way was granted, on condition that gates were erected. From Dr. Baynton, reporting case of typhoid fever in Parnell Rise.—Received. From the Survey Office, stating that the area of this block (Parnell endowment) absorbed by roads was 23 acres 1 rood, leaving oub of tho total area of 1,000 acres a balance of 976 acres 3 roods.—The letter was received. From Mr Frederick Mooro, enclosing a letter from Mr W. S. Cochrane, Secretary of tho General Trust Board, seating that if the Council would take over and complete the road in Figgs's estate for £20, tho Board would contribute half the cost of completing ib bo the extent of £10. Mr Moore offered to pay another £10 towards the outlay, and asked the Council to forward the work withoub delay. The foreman of works was questioned as to what the cost of finishing the road would be, and he said he considered it could be done for £20, including metalling. The application was received, and on the motion of Mr Dewes ib was agreed to call for tenders for tho work after the specifications have been submitted to the Streets Committee. Rki'OUTS.—From the foreman of works, reporting on the growth of trees near certain sowers and tho probable damage which thoy might causo. Ho also recommended that tho drain pipes in Avonstreet should be taken up and attended to. — The roporb was adopted. Messrs Koylan and Lundon forwarded ft report on Cleveland Road sewer. Thoy stated thatafter acnrofuloxamination, Mr Lundon reported that ib was quite uninjured and intact, although some of tho filling had been washed in at the upper end, forming a hod of clay along the bottom of tho sower. As tho contract was still under maintenance, they had notified Mr Choyne that before thoy took over the contract ho would have to clean out the sower, and he had promised to do so. Tho Mayor eaid Mr Choyne was quite willing to clean out the drain whenever I he Council was prepared to take over tho work.—Tho letter was received.

Watbkwokks R_por.t—Wm.foli Waste. —The turncock reported having inspected all the water taps and found litblo cause for complaint, bub there certainly was a wilful waste going on, for tho meter registered 60,000 gallons more than the weok before. 11 o believed some people must let their taps run all night on a mistaken idea that they are keeping their drainsclear. Ho suggested that, for the future, all new work and all taps thab are to be replaced should be marked "Hiddian's best." It could be done by informing licensed plumbers of the same. During the last year there had been 11,841,600 gallons of water consumed.—The report was received. A statement of tho borough accounts was submitted, and current accounts wore passed for payment.
