The Union Company's new steamer Pukaki was brought in last evening. The whole populace, apparently, assembled on the wharf to see her como up, the churches being quite deserted. She will leave for Melbourne on Wednesday.

The Court of Appeal opened this morning before the Chief Justice and Judges Williams, Gillies and Ward. Although there were thirteen counsel present and a lonsr list, some dilliculty was experienced in getting a case to go on with, partly owing to tho Palinerston native lawsuit in which six lawyers are engaged, being still before nisi pn%is % and partly owing to the absence of several counsel. The Wellington suit, Staples and Joseph, is now being heard. The Baptist Conference began its sittings this morning.
Tauranga, this day.
As tho ratepayers of Katikati riding, Tauranga county, are dissatisfied with the action of the Council in reducing the riding representation numbers, action lias been taken in the Supreme Court on alleged irregularity, and an injunction has been served on tho Council restraining them from holding the election on the 16th, although the nominations are all in. It virtually means suspending tho Council for the present.
