To-day's Meeting.

THE PREMIER'S REPLY CONSIDERED UNSATISFACTORY.

Protectionists Determined.

To-day's meeting of the protectionist was attended by twenty-three members, Mr Moss presiding. Several members wrote regretting their inability to attend, owing to the sitting of the Midland Railway Committee and other important Committees taking place ab the same hour. The deputation appointed on Saturday reported the result of their interview, and it was unanimously resolved that the Premier's reply was unsatisfactory. A committee was appointed, consisting of Messrs Moss, Percival, Dr. Fihchett, Messrs Ward, Cadman, Fraser, W. P. Reeves, Seddon, and Downie Stewart to ■consider the whole question, and to report to a further meeting of the" party to be Held at 9.30 to-morrow morning.

Messrs Goldie, Lawry and T. Thompson, did not attend the meeting. The other members say that if the question is deferred till next session the usual business connected with the Estimates for the year, the Address-in-Reply, and similar matters will take up so much time as to practically again render a revision of the tariff impossible unless Government are thoroughly in earnest in bringing it on* Looking to the constitution of the Government and the expressed opinions of nearly all their supporters, they consider such a result is exceedingly unlikely. Mr Moss informs me that he is opposed to tabling a no-confidence motion if other means can be devised of raising the question of protection this session.
