At the Ministerial Conference this morning a Committee was appointed to consider the desirableness of having the maintenance of Fire Brigades and plants for the suppression of fire put on a more satisfactory basis than at present-. The question ot Inditing an amendment in hospital and charitable institutions iii the direetien of a general board to raise and expend funds for Hospital and Charitable Aid and the appointment of Boards of Management responsible to the general boards was relegated to a Committee. A suggestion made by Auckland City Council that lines under the Licensing and Police On'eneee Act should be made payable to the Borough iiund agreed to.

WAITEMATA COUNTY COUNCIL

ELECTION-

Considerable interest lias been evoked by the election of councillors in tho County of Waitemata. The nomination for Northcote Riding took place yesterday, when Mr Alexander Bruce having been the only can didate nominated the Returning Officer, Mr Seaman, declared him to be duly elected, The following gentlemen have been nominated to represent Wainui in the Wailemata County Council:—Messrs. Charles Hardy, Andrew Jack, jun., and John Moflatt. A poll will, be held on the 16th instant. For Birkcnhead riding, there are two candidates in tho Held— Messrs Withoford and Thompson—and feeling ib running very high. Tho nomination day for thisri'dinghas not yet arrived, but there will be no other candidates,while those now in tho field will assuredly go to the poll. Tho local electors of tho riding appear to be divided in their support of the candidates, and it is expected that the vote of non-resident electors will decide the day.
