Auckland Tattersall's Club.
The night before the V.R.C. Derby is always one of the greatest betting nights of the year, and there was a large attendance at Tattersall's to .hear the odds called over. Remus was backed for the Cup at 100's to 4 and 5, at which price £450 was taken in one line. 100 to 6 was also taken, and he shortened down to 100 to 10. There was a commission out to back 'Frisco, his price at the start being 100 to 5. At a few hundreds being taken he shortened a point. Oakleigh was greatly fancied, and Silver Prince rather easier, while for the Derby Abercorn strengthened to 6 to 4 on. The following are the quotations :— Melbourne Cup.—Aleerian, 100 to 33; Silver Prince, 100 to 20 (off); Oakleigh, 100 to 20; Abercorn, 100 to 10 (off); Meteor, 100 to 9; Trident, 100 to 10; Thunderbolt, 100 to 5; Australian Peer/lOOto 8 ; Cranbrook, 100 to 8; Silvermine, 100 to 6; Dunlop, 100 to 7; Niagara, 100 to 5 ; Recall, 100 to 7; Frisco, 100 to 5; Enfilade, 100 to 5; Remus, 100 to 10; Tranter, 100 to 6 ; Jebusite, 100 to 5 ; Sardius, 100 to 3 ; Affluence, 100 to 4; Escutcheon, 100 to 3 ; Charmer, 100 to 2; Pakeha, 100 to 3. Derby.—Abercorn, 6 to 4 on; Tranter, 100 to 25 agst; Niagara, 7to I; Australian Peer, 6to 2; Enfilade, 6to 1; Pakeha, 100 to 8.
