Hanlan in Sydney.

Edward Haulau, ex-champion sculler of the world, arrived in Sydney by the 11.M.5. Zealandia on the 22nd inst. Hanlan did nob look, well ; he lost nearly a stone in weight during bhe voyage from San Fianscisco bo Australia. The Canadian was met on the wharf by two friends, and after an interchange of greetings, he drove to Petty's Hotel, where he is ab present residing. He will exercise on the Parramatta Rive"shortly. George Brett will train him for his match on the Nepean River with Beach, the champion oarsman of the world.

Gvs Exte>*sio>-.— The Auckland Gas Co. intimated their intention to open up Victoria Terrace and Church-street for the purpose of supplying Messrs Duder and Ilolmden with gas. , . Street Works.—The Foreman of V. orks reported that footpaths had been made in Church and Rutland Streets, while repairs had been effected to the Lake Road, and a drain laid in Church-street to carry off storm water. He also reported that the defence authorities had be^un to re-form Vauxhall Road with metal, in order to pub the thoroughfare in as good a state as it was before the Government cartage broke it up. The report was adopted. A propds of the injury by Government to Vauxhall Road, Arthur Bell {engineer for defence works) wrote that Council's representation re extent of damage had been exaggerated. Tram Line.— R. and R. Duder wrote offering to carry out the construction of bhe seaward retaining wall jointly with the Council, or to pub the tram-line roadway in the same good order as it was before it was injured by the recent heavy gale. —-In answer to a question, Cr. Alison denied that he was in any way interested in the trams.' He thought every facility should be offered for the successful conduct of bhe trams, instead of bhe owners being hampered wibh restrictions. The original Company only paid 4s in the £, so that ib was unfair to throw too many difficulties in the way of a public convenience.—lt was decided to accept Messrs Duder's offer to place the road in as good a condition as it was before it was damaged by the gale. BURGESS Roll.—On the application of Mrs Alison, senr., ib was decided toplace her name on the Burgess Roll in lieu of that of her deceased husband (Mr A. x\lison). Tenders. — Tenders for carting and supply of road metal, etc. :— F. Duder, Wells Bros., Davis Bros. Objection was taken to this last bender on the ground that the condition which prescribed a cash deposit of £3 had been violated by the enclosure of a cheque deposit. Cr. Pitbs befriended tho absent tenderers by cashing their cheque. Davis Bros, were considerably the lowest tenderers for every item except shells, and their tender was accordingly accepted. Water Sufi_v.— The Waterworks Committee recommended :—(1) That the recommendation of the ratepayers to call for competitive schemes for a water supply be adopted. (2) That with the view of giving effect to this, the resolution carried on the 23rd August, 1887, adopting Waterworks Committee's report of 18th August, be rescinded, and Mr Knox's £13,000 scheme be rejected, and he be informed of the Council's intention to call for compebibive schemes. (3) Thab bhe condibions for competitive schemes be prepared by the Committee.—The report was adopted. Streets axd Works Committee.—This Committee recommended that no further action be taken in tbe matter of levels of Beach Road ab junction of Buchan and Clarence-streets, as the cutting is only six inches. —Report adopted. Clarence-street. — Objections to the proposed levels ot this street were received from Mrs .Vynyard, senior, R. J. Roberts, and J. Williams. As the objectors were nob present, the question of considering bhe levels was dof erred until the next meeting, the objectors in the meantime to be invited to present themselves on that occasion. Finance and Legal Committee.—lb was resolved, upon the recommendation of this Committee—(l) To givo notice to property owners in Alison Avenue to clear away the gorse there; and (2) that W. Hobson's omnibus time-table be approved, the question of starting point being referred to the Streets and Works Committee. The matter of adopting prompt measures for the general removal of fursc from road lines, etc., was referred to the Finance and Legal Committee. Cr. R. H. Duder was added to this Committee.

The Pound.—lt was decided to direct the atention of the poundkeeper (Mr Nicholson) to the fact that he was not always to be found, and requesting him to keep the key somewhere near the pound.

Water Supply and Mr Knox's Scheie. —It was decided, on the Mayor's motion, " That in accordance with the resolution passed at ratepayers' meeting the resolution passed on 23rd August adopting the report of the Waterworks Committee be rescinded, and that Mr Knox's £13,000 scheme bo rejected with the object of calling for competitive schemes." —The Mayor explained that Mr Knox's scheme was rejected not on account of any fault or defect, but merely in order that the ratepayers' desire for competitive schemes should be gratified.
