Newton.

In reply, to several letters from electors of Newton, Mr C. DeLautour, of Gisborne,< has wired-:—" Ido not see my way to enter politics now;, otherwise, would be well pleased to give Ttfewton another rally." 7\ ■--. Eden. £ f Mr A. K. Taylor, whose name has in former years been mentioned in connection with this seat, is now likely to come iovward. A deputation of Mount Albert ratepayers waited .upon "him the other day, when Mr Taylor consented to contest the seat if a requisition were presented to him. Franklin North. Mr. F. Lawry will decidedly not contest Eden seat. He" never, had any intention of seeking the suffrages of that constituency, but' is quite resolved to contest Franklin North.- .:■ •", -'' '■" ;■; ; , /.•";•/,".,'.' -.■; Northern Maori District ! The candidates already out. for this seat are Katene, the present member for the district1, Sydney Taiwhanga, a former candidate, and Pomar'e.' Others are spoken of. i Sydney Taiwhariga's petition against the election of Kateue for this district is to be heard in Auckland on the 12th of July', and we understand that the Chief Justice is coming from Wellington to hear the evidence. Efforts are now being made to settle the matter, and it is probable that these will be successful. It is said that the inquiry will cost a great deal of money if held.

The Redistribution 'Commission

The " Post "makes a severe attack'upon the Representation Commissioners, and says they have conducted their work in a most unsatisfactory manner. It says that the secrecy observed as to their deliberations gives most ■ unfair advantage to sitting nvembers, as it is notorious that they were shown copies of the draft 'map prepared beforehand,* and upon which the Commissioners have been working. It also alleges that sitting. members are very quickly made aware of changes made by the Commissioners, and says1 there is "leakage somewhere." According to the , "Times" extraordinary precautions have been taken to secure absolute secrecy as to the new boundaries; nothing' can leak; out. save through treachery, and any such breach of faith could be directly tsheeted home to the guilty parties. ■ : jo .. _■

Otago Seats

' The protectionists have tried to induce Messrs Halleristein, Burt arid Kempthorne to contest Duriediri. Central, but neither would, stand, i It is pretty certain that Mr Hutchison will be induced to forsake Roslyn and he will be opposed by Mr R. B; iCargill.on the independent.ticket. ■ Mr J. Mills had been, asked by a number of central electors to leave Port Chalmers and contest the central, which would have relieved him from the Dock question, which is sure to prove a thorny one, but he declined. Ido not think that Mr Gore or Mr Mills will h'ave^ pppbsition after all. Mr Hodge : will oppose Mr Barron. ;o ..■■
