A GRAVE CHARGE.
Alleged Bastardly Assault.
On Satvirday night last a man named CharlesPattei-son was arrested by Detectives Doolan and Hughes on a charge preferred by a married woman named Bella Cowderoy of having1 thrown vitriol on her. It would appear from Mr 3 Cowderoy's statement that Patterson had been lodging in her house, and that for some reason that does mot transpire she gave him notice to leave. This Patterson did, but he frequently pestered her with requests to take him back, and on being refused made himself most abnoxious and offensive to her. Frequently _ she say 3 she has been compelled to get into tramcars and 'busses to avoid annoyanco at his hands. On Saturday night between 10 and 11 o'clock Mrs Cowderoy was in Queen-street in company with a young female friend, when she alleges that Patterson came up to her and jostled her rudely, at the samo time throwing the contents of a small bottle over her. Ifc took effect on the back of a heavy fur-lined, clock that she wore, and was at first thought to be oil. Mrs CowdercSy's companion touched the stain : and the liquid, on the 'garment burnt her hand so severely that she was compelled to go to Messrs King and Son's druggist's shop to get her injuries attended to. It was there discovered that the Kquid thro wn on Mrs Cowderoy was vitriol. The acid had by this time eaten a Dirge hole in the back of the cloak, while there were large brown stains on other ports. I nformation was at once given to the police, and' the detectives shortly afterwards ran their man to earth and logded him in the lock-up.
At the Police Court this morning, the accused was cl larged before Captain Thomas and Mr S. V,'. Collins, Justices, with unlawfully and maliciously throwing, at and upon one Isabella Cowderoy a certain corrosive QxufL —to wit, a-quantity of vitriol — with intent in so dome to inflict grievous bodily harm on the said Isabella Cowderoy. The accused, a quiet looking: man about 45 years of age, was not called on to plead, the charge beiiy^ an indictable one.—Sergeant Pratt applie d for a remand, as the police had not had thr ,c to get up the case. —Remanded till Thurs day, bail being allowed in two sureties d: £25 each, and the accused himeelf in £5 0.
