..Tho dog.kennels, are now filled with unregistered and ownorloss animals many of whom ...are useless curs of which the city would be well rid. There are, however, one or two nice dogs which it would be a pity to destroy. Any-person in want of "such a dawg" would do well to step round to the kennel. -
At the Choral Society's rehearsal last night Herr Schmitt made a graceful reference to Mr Charles Hemus's long and valued services as leader of the orchestra and expressed tho hope that every member of the chorus would do hia or her best to promote the success of the approaching benefit concert to that gentleman. He said that during tho six years of his own residence in Auckland and probably for many years previously Mr Hemus had been most punctual in his attendance ab rehearsals and performances, and had always done his duty faithfully, artistically and well. Thoro will bo no rehearsal next week.
A meeting of persons desirous of seeing a Reading Room and Literary. lustitute opened in Devonport. and willing to assist in promoting this object takes place in the DevOnport Hall to-night. The meeting has been convened l_»y the) Mayor, and a largo at/tond-woe is desired.
