FIRE AT THE MUNICIPAL BUILDINGS.
The total damage at bhe Free Public Library building is estimated at about L 270. The building and its contents are covered by insurance to the extent of £30,000. Wo are glad to learn, that the insurance companies have asked for a coroner's enquiry, at which, it may be hoped, some evidence throwing more light upon the mysterious occurrence, will be elicited. Tho building is now under the constant protection qf a night watchman. An impression having gob abroad that there have been two fires in tho New Free Public Library, it is perhaps necessary to state that there has been no fire whatever in tho Auckland library since its removal to the new premises. The first report arose through a telegraphic report of a fire in -the Christchurch Library being erroneously published among local news; tho second fire, as most people known was not in the Library at all but in the Council Chamber, which is ab a considorablo disbance from the Library^ though under tho same roof.
