THE GOLDFIELDS.
(BY TELEGRAFH.— OWN COKRESFONDENT.)
Thames, this day.
Saxon. —Thanks to the courtesy of the manager I was to-day afforded an opportunity of inspecting the workings at No. 3 level, on Connon's reef in the hillward drive. Upon examining the workings I observed that': three jumps" in the reef, have taken place within the last 25 feet but the lode recovered from the two former as driven upon, and was a nice strong body of quartz fully 2ft wide when the present clay seam was met with. This had the effect of almost cutting out the reef altogether, as nothing remained but a dark seam about an inch thick in places. The manager has continued the drive more to the left, and it has now been extended some 6 or 8 feet since the clay scam Mas intersected, for the whole of which distance the dark vein already alluded to can be traced. It contains a quantity of dark mineral similar to that distributed through the quartz when the reef was of large size, but has more the appearance of a dark sandstone than quartz, although there is a little gritty quartz to be found through it. In the present face the country has improved, and is an excellent white sandstone of a favourable nature for gold, while what seems to bo a flinty is also making its appearance. No work was proceeding in the winzo on the same reef at the time of my visit, but the manager states that the reef has not been broken down.
