CORRESPONDENCE.
Kauri Timber in England.
(To the Editor.)
Sra,—As none of those more interested in the timber trade than myself have seemed to notice the palpable-error in the AgentGeneral's letter to Sir Julias Vogel re the price cf cur kauri timber in the English market, kindly allow me space to point out that—unless the system of timber measurement in England is entirely different from ours-whatthe Agent-Generaldescribesas "a ruinous price of 3s per cubic foot " is just the reverse. A piece cf 12 x 12 one foot long contain? twelve feet of timber as sold in New Zealand. This cubic focb, we are told, realised Ss in England, being at the rate of 23s per 100 foot, a price which ought to satisfy everyone, and which will pay to produce, timber from the most remote of our kauri forests. Instead of requiring condolements we ought to be congratulating ourselves ; for here we have a market which cannot be pluttod, and the AgentGeneral's letter ought to cause the directors of every timber company in the province to consider seriously the advisability of immediately filling their bushes with hands in order to prepare for the immense export which must naturally take place erelong, and which-when it does take place—will materially benefit every other industry in the province.—A. J. Capsian, Coromandel. April 14th, ISS7.
