VOLUNTEER NOTES
NO. 2 BATTALION.
The inspection parade of this battalion took place at the Drill-shed last evening, the City Guards mustering, as nsual.in the strongest force. The parade state wob as follows : Victoria3,under Captain Cooper and Lieutenant Somors, 32 ; City Guarde, undor Captain Waddel and Lieutenants Dormer and Shomilt, 42; Hobeons, under Captain Little and Lieutenant Nightingale, 32; Queen's Own, under Captian Keep, 34. Lieut.-Colonel Dignan, Major Clifton, and Adjutant Skinnor were also on parade. Tho mon wero put through a coureo of musketry instruction by Major Pirio, Sergeant Majors Nelly and Campboll. Tho companies wero then handed ovor to their respective captains, the rolls callod, and the parade diEmissod.
CITY GUARDS.
Major Isaacs lms handed ovor to tho company a Bilvor medal, which ia be to fired tor on Saturday, April 2.
OUEEN'S OWN RIFLES.
Last night tho mornbors of this Corps wero callod upon to eloct two lioutonants, in place of Messrs Collier and Finlayson, rotirod. The Company having boon marchod to tho lovol ground ontsido tho Drill-Bhod, candidates weroduly proposed andeeconded; and then Captnin Koop callod upon oach in succession to take over tho Company for ton minutes' drill, in ordor to give tho men an opportunity of forming an opinion of tho merits of their roepectivo candidates. At j tho conclusion, tho men wore called upon to record thoir vote?, whon Vol. Bailoy and Vol. Mowbray proved tho successful candidates. Mr Bailey has not beon long from England, and was, until leaving, a member of tho Queen's Own, Westminster, having beon in that crack Voluntoor regiment ton and a-balf years, and hold rank as fir=t lieutonant. Ho hold certilicato as having paenod a Captain's examination, and an extra certificate from tho Wollington barracks as having passed tho examination as laid down for ofllcors of the Imperial Army io tactics. Mr Mowbray ia well known,and is justly popular in Volunteoring ciiclos.having been a Volunteer evor since ho was in tho cadets He oarly distinguished himsolf as a shot in winning tho champion bolt in the cadet corps, and which ho still holda. Ho will fill a lonr^-felt want of an officer in tho Company who shoots, and will no doubt poon mako his influonro in that direction felt. Tho Company aru to bo congratulated on being able to sccuro tho services of two euch firetclaee men, and this will bo appreciated by Captain Keep in having their support and assistance. Five othor drilled men wcro proposed ns members. This company will firo a friendly match with the numbers of tho 0. Battery at Mount Edon Kaneo on Saturday next ; seven ehois at oach 200, 300, and 500 yard", ten men a eido.
VICTORIA RIFLES
Sergeant Jas. I.oe, holder of tho district champion belt, was laet evening elected to tho position of lioutonant of this corps.
DEVONPOKT NAVALS.
Thoro was a large muster of tha Devonport Navals at tho torpedo shed last evening, many boing under tho impreetion that the adjourned annual mooting was to be held after drill. It appeared, however, that sotno mieundurttanding had arisen os to the adjournment, tho tiret motion passed for an adjournment for Tuesday cvouing having beon altered for Friday ovening next. On that occasion all tho " accounts " aro oxpectod to bo brought forward, and some sottlemenb- of tho proeont unsatisfactory state of things will probably bo arrived at.
