Attempted Robbery at Mount Eden.

On Sunday night a daring robbery was attempted at the rosidooce of Mr W. Ait ken Council, Mount Eden. Mr Connoll wae absont from homo, and between eleven and twelve o'clock Mrs Connoll and a lady who was staying with her heard footsteps outride. They opened a window and saw a man walking across tho lawn towards tho stable. Ho whistled, and anothor man joined him. Mrs Connoll made a noiw with the window, thinking that the men, finding they were dotected, would make off, but thoy simply laughed. Mra Connoll now a lid to her friend, loud onough for tho men to hear, that sho had a loiidud revolver inside, and would try that. The impudent ratuals laughed again, but were rather astonished when the revolver way actually produced, and a shot sent whistling above thorn. They considered this was making things rather too warm, and thoy not only departed, but stood not upon the order of thoir going, decamping as fast aa their legs could carry them. Mrs Connoll and her friend wont down to tho stablo and found a barrow in which a saddle and other articlos had been placed proparatory to removal. It is evident that the men know of Mr Council's absence and thought they might make a rich haul of plunder with ease. A little dog which usually mikes a great noiso whon atrangors are about had disappeared but caruo back noxt day. Mrs Connoll'a courage alono prevented tho men Irom succeeding in their marauding entorpri/.0. Kesidonta in tho suburbs should be on thoir guard now that th»y know such characters sic about.
