ACCIDENTS AND INQUESTS.
A melancholy and fatal accident occurred at Russell on Wednesday morning, Novembsr 10 A boat capsized in the bay, and two men on board. Edward Goffe and a native, were drowned. The s.s. Ida went to the rescue, but was only in time to. save the boat. A strong Kale is blowing from the south west.
A sad boating fatality occurred at Tauranga. on Sunday afternoon, November 11. Mr R. Rhodes, senr., and his little sou Ernest were out boating and when near Stoney Point, heading for Pilot Bay the boat was capsized. The accident was witnessed by Mrs Rest and Captain Best, and the pilot and one of hin men put out to their assistance: but they were unable to reaoh them and Mr Rhodes and his little son met a watery grave. Captain Best and others subsequently went Qut in a larger boat but wore unable to find any trace o£ them. When lost seen they were on the edge of the boat between the eddies in the vicinity of where the Taupo was wrecked. . Rhodes was the father of the proprietor of the "Tauranga Evening News, a very old Auckland colonist and one of the pioneers of th 3 Thames. He was universally esteemed by nil who knew him, and the melancholy affair has cast quite a gloom over the town. The deceased was 56 years of age and his little son 11 years. A young man named George Webster was drowned on November 24 while boating at Wattahuna, Otago.
A man named Audus Nugvest, a FinUnder, cgpd 3S years, was drowned at Northern Wairoa on Saturday, November 13.
At Kawakawa on Nov. 23, a young man named Robert Ross, son of a settler at Ruapekapeka, vas accidentally killed by a fall of earth while roud-making. A young man named John Sawkin was thrown from his horse in Lower High-street, Christchurch, on Thursday night, November 11, receiving injuries on the head, from which he died three hours after the accident.
Charles S. Keliern, carpenter, employed by the Waikato C»al and Steam Company, was drowned in the Waikato River at Taupiri on Wednesday, Nov. 10. He was pushing a barge away from the wharf, when he lost his balance and fell into the water. His body was recovered about midday at Huntley.
The ship Turakina, from London, lost an able seaman, named John Tullwan, overboard, on the voyage. He was seized with a fit while stowing the jtb, and fell overthere being no hope of saying him. The ship arrived at Wellington on December 1.
