Lake Rotorua Overflowing.
A Cometery Floodod
(BY TELEGRAPH -OWN CORRESPONDENT.)
Rotobua, this day,
Sojib alarm has been caused here by the continued rising of .ihe lovel of Lake Rotorua, which was>t first thought to bo due to a subsidence of the shores The real cause is found in the former outlet of the lake being blocked and the prevalence of wetweath»r adding to the volume of the lake, the inflow being rendered greater by tho coating of volcanic matter, which prevents the rain from being absorbed in the soil as formerly. , The little peninsula of Muruika, on which tho Maori burying place is situated, and the new ohurchof St. Foith.-bas >>een almost completely submerged, and the lother niglit several Maori coffins withtheir ghastly freight were to be seen, floating on the lake- A number of dwelling-houses near the margin of the lake ere flooded, and the ohurch referred to am danger also. The Maoris are removing their dead to a new place of sepulture. Residents here blame theGovernmentfor not cutting a new outlet for the waters of the lake which could be done at a trifling cost, and would prevent any destruction of property, -
As thero appears to bo some mieupprchension as to the time required to qunltfy for roeietration aa voters in tho cueo ol those, removing to new districts, we wotlid remind electors that within ono month after removing they ore entitled to have their names put upon the electoral roll The six months'residence is only required in the case of new arrivals to tho colony, or persons who havo not formerly been on the roll.
