A report from the Engineer was received, stating that ho had laid the plans for tho cutting down of Hobson-street on tho table; they were not yet completed in every detail. If all other arrangements wcro satidfuctory, tenders ought to bo called noxt week. Tho bridging from the high lovol towards Hob-_on-stieet Wharf was not included in tho present contract works, on account of alterations that would first be made by the Harbour Hoard in removing sheds, fences, &c, now on the proposed line of road to tho wharf. This bridging could bo lot subsequently in a separate contract, and could easily bo completed during the time the road works were iv progress. Tho works to be done under the contract are as follows :— Tho cutting down of Hobson-street from junction of Vie toria-ttreot iv ono grade, to a height to be filled in at the junction of Customs-street of fully 12 feot, with drainage, motalling, &c , and tho continuation of drain from foot of Hobson-street to breastwork of river f rontago. Tho cutting out of Durham-street from l Impel street to tho new level in Hobson-stroet, replacing the drainage, kerbing, metalling, &c;, as now laid down. The cutting out of Wyndhametreet from west end of Mr Marshall's brick building to tho now level in flobson-street, replacing the drainage, kerbing, motalling, &c.,_s now laid down. The ombinking of Customs street over 12 feet in depth at junction of Hobsonstreet, and continuing iame in one grade of permanent level of approach to Nolson-Btrect and from thoneo running down to existing low lovol, about 00 foot beyond the west otid of the New Zealand Timber Co.'s mills ; and from Hob.'ou-street to the present level of Albert-street. The width of low level was proposed to be left about 35 foot, and the width of high level would vary, according to tho depth of filling, from 10 to ;">ofeet. A timber breast fucing with piles would be placed along the deepest part of tho filling oast and west from tho junction of Hobsonstreet. These piloa would be about 10 feet above tho low lovel at junction of Hobsonstroet, and would be curiied enet and woit of this junction, terminating at. about I feet in height. From thenco the ground would slopoupto high lovol. Tho otreots to be dealt with in some future contract would be Chapel-street, tiwanson-stroot, and Moore-strt-ut. Ah the cuttings wero vory deep in thotio Btreots, tho cutting cut of a portion of tho private lands would require to be done when tho streets were cut, as the ground at loast sloped into privato properties, sons to obtain the full width of streets. Tho Mayor moved that the plana bo laid on tho table, with a view to their consideration next week. Cr. Goldie, in seconding, thought more information regarding the compensation to be paid would bo desirable. A motion by Cr. Dignan for the suspension of standing orders in order that tenders might bo called at once failod to lind a focondcr, and the Mayor's motion was carried.
