New Goldfield on the West Coast.

Government Exertions to Open It. (BT TELEGRAPH. — OWN HKPOBTER.) Weli INCHON, this day. A ooon doal of interest appears to be manifested in tho Big Bay as a probable new goldfield. TnP Minister ot Mineß has received a considerable number of applications for passages to that locality, and all who are willing to prospect at their own risk will be afforded an oppor tunity of reaching the district. The Govorntnont, howovor, wifl accopt no responsibility on tho matter. Tho country is reportod to bo rich in minerals, but nothing definite is known about it, and, therefore, those who go will bo given to understand that they do not go to a goldiield, but to n district which requires prospecting. The applications fo far receive J for freo paesages to Big Bay aro from Otago, Southland, and tho West Coast, and Mr I arnach expocts that before long about 100 prospectors will bo on tho ground. Judging from tho report recently presented to l'arliamont tho Kod Hill and Big Hay districts aro exceedingly lilcoly spots for the discovery of puyable alluvial and quartz gold, and if thoroughly competent prospectors have an opportunity af testing the country there is ovtry probability of good rp*tjHs accruing. Tho Hinemoa left for Greymouth to-day, and will bring to Wellington as many mipers as aro desirous of trying their luck at Big Pay, and an oarly opportunity will bo alforded them to reach the supposed golden district. Tho question of extending etoam service to Jackson'a and Martin's Bays is occupying Iho attention of the Government, who aro desirous of doing all thoy cart in this direction, but it is a question of cost, arid the service will only be undertaken upon ronsonable terms. If payable gold is discovered in Big Bay, thore will bo littlo diillculty in obtaining a regular service, as the increase of population there will doubtless afford sufficient inducement to some of the steamboat companies to run boatß down the coast.
