Ho also intimated that potitions had boon rocoivod, signed by 1G persons and 7 porsons, and it was for tho Committeo to stato whether thoy would bo recoivod. Ho hncl informed tho gontloman who had brought them that thoy woro not in compliance with tho Act.

At tho direction of tho Chairman, tiio Socrotary road the petitions. That eignod hy -16 persons, objoctid to tho granting of tbo licenso, because it was unnocossary ; and besides, thoy objected to tho City of Auckland seeking to mako a revenuo by forcing » lie- need houso in the district. Tho second potition was from *oven residents of Arch Hill, and objected to the renewal on tho ground that tho houso was not required, and also that it had boon badly conducted

Mr Soaman intimated that another application for a liconso had boon mado by .1, C. Seccombe.

Mr Cotter stated that the application was not antagonistic to Mr Curnow, but was nioroly put in caso tho other application should bo rofuscd.

Mr S. Heskoth, who nppoared for tho present licensee, Mr Curnow, said ho did not think that tho Committee should rofuso to rocoivo the potitions against tho license, and he snid this because he had a petition signed by 140 persons in favour of the retention of the license. This relit ion was road, also a letter from Mr D. Dunningham Btating that the hotel had been frequently used by bitn when driving ; _ock between the Northern districts and the city. He urged that the license should bo renewed. After some discussion, tho Committeo hold a consultation, and decided to rofuso tho licenso ou the ground that it was not required.
