CITY COUNCIL.
An adjourned meeting of the City Council -was held on Saturday erening at 6.30. There were present -.—His "Worship the Mayor, Councillors Kidd, Holland, Mssefield, Garratt, Laßoche, Burns, Goldie, Phillipps, Waymouth, Aickin, Crowther, Atkin, Montague, Cooper, Devore, Dignan, and Evans. Correspondence.—Letters were received from the City Council of Christchurch asking the Council to unite in a proteat to the Government against the use of the telegraph poles in the chief cities of the coloDy for advertising purposes. Tender 3 had already been invited by the Government for the right to use the telegraph poles for that purpose—lt was decided to assist in preventing the nuisance. From J. C. Rhodes, contractor for the alterations to tho offices of the Australian Mutual Provident Insurance Co. (Goadson's corner), asking for permission to erect a hoarding to S feet outside the footpath, as tho proposed alterations were of a dangerous character. TheßuildingSurveyor appended a memo, to the effect that though the subject matter of the application was contrary to the Building Regulations, be recommended that the extension of the hoarding be granted when necessary—lt was decided to grant the application. Mr John M. McLacblan, who was present, having obtained the leave of the Mayor, addressed the Council on the matter of street hoardings generally, to which he had a strong objection. He intimated that he had written to the Council on the subject.
Petition. —A petition, presented by Cr. Devore, from the ratepayers of Oliffconsfcreet, asking that the road be formed, was referred to the Streets Committee. A petition from the ratepayers of Randolphstreet. asking that the street be kerbed and channelled, and from the ratepayers of Wood-street, asking for a modification of the levels, were similarly denlt with. Streets Committee Repoet.—This Committee recommended : -(1) He letter from H. N. Abbott, re repairs Opera House urinal: Your Committee find that the watei ueed at this urinal costs at least £150 per annum, in addition to £20 for gas, aud therefore recommend that application be declined, and suggest to the Council the desirability of establishing urinals of their own (2) JBe letter from A. H. Nathan, re condition of Lower Symonds-street : Kecommend that the work be done, and that the same referred to ward members as to when. (3) Re letter from B. JB. Barnett, re patent semi-prism lights for footpath gratings : That the Engineer be requested to favourably advise their uae. (4) Petition from property-owners, Shelly Beach Road, objecting to levels ; Your Committee report that the same has been dealt with by the Council. (5) Letter from James Page, re to permit to erect buildings : That application be not entertained. (6) Letter from Town Clerk, Newton, re water supply: That same be supplied for domestic purposes only on same terms as supplied to , ParneL Borough, and subject to a month's notice •at any time to discontinue the supply. ■ (7) Report by City Engineer, re Emily Place : That pame be referred to the ward members.— W. Ceowther,Chairman." Cr. Crowther moved the adoption of the report. —Cr. Montague moved an amendment of Clause 1 to the effect that the sum of £10 asked for by Mr Abbott be granted. This was agreed to, and the report, as amendad, was adopted,
Legal Committee. — This Committee brought up an interim report to the effect that no application bo made for the renewal of the license of the Northern Hotel-on Edgcumbe's estate. —Cr. Devore moved, aa an amendment to the motion that the report bo adopted, that the renewal of the license be applied for at the ordinary time. —Thie, after considerable discussion, was earned by twelve votes to five. The voting was as follows :—For the amendment: The Mayor, Crs. Montague, Orowther, Kidd, Evans, Cooper, Devore, Dignao, La Roche, Garratt, Burns, and Maseiield. Against: Cis. Gkildie, Atkin, Phillipps, Waymoutb, and Aickin.
Abattoirs. —Tenders for repairs to the City Abattoirs were opeDed as follows: — Mclntosh and Copeland, £70 ; C. M. Neweon, £9S ; J. Smith, £119 los; K. S. Moore, £400 4s. The Engineer's estimate for the work was £90.—Cr. Goidie move!, and it was resolved, that tbe whole question of the management of the abattoirs be referred to the Finance Committee.
Auctioneers' Licenses, etc.— A memo, was received from the Town Clerk, stating tbat several auctioneers' and other licenses had not been renewed. - It was decided to requent the police authorities to take proceedings againet those who have not taken up their licenses. Tbe question of the issue of licenses was referred to the Legal Committee to report. Cemetery. — Thegentlemen recommended by the several religious denominations as gnardiaas of the cemeteries were appointed in accordance with the Act. The consideration of the Cemeteries By-laws was postponed until the next ordinary meeting of the Council. ■ Thiß was all the business.
