Fatality at Sea

Sxdnky, April 23.—Tbe schooner Sir John Franklin has arrived from Wellington. Captain Macdonald reports that during a heavy gale the chief mato, named Thomas Henderson, was washed overboard and drowned. All efforts to rescue proved fruitless. Quarantine Against Smallpox. The Chimborazo has arrived hore. The passengers have beon placed in quarantine on account of the case of smallpox which occurred on the voyage out. Australian Mutual Provident Society. Sydney, April 22 —At vhe annual meeting of tho Australian Mutual Providont Society the report was adopte 1, except the portion dealing with the establishment of a branch office in London, the question being held ovor for the consideration of a special meeting. Tho Charges Against Holt. Holt, the manager of the Bank of New Zealand here, has been committed for trial on auothor chargo of embezzlement. The Now South Wales Budget. Adelaide, April 22.—A splendid rainfall has been experienced throughout the colony. Colonial Riflo Team for Wimbledon. Melbourne, April 22.—The proposal recently put forward for a representation of tho colonies at the forthcoming Wimbledon prize firing has met with such support that it has definitely been decided to eond an intercolonial riflo team borne to take part in the Wimbledon meeting.
