THE HORTICULTURAL SHOW.
DtmiHd the whole of today there waa a fair attendance at the above Exhibition. As on previous occasions, the Committee issued invitations to the children of the variouT Orphan Homos to vißit the Show. It is needless to state that the offer waa accepted. Early in the morning the children from St. Stephen's Orphanage, Parnell, were proaent, and later on other little ones attended. Mr Beloe, of Pukekohe, did not forgot these visitors, but kindly f orwurded a box of apples tor their special uee. This is a custom that is continued !at every Show, do that tho children no doubt look forward to these exhibitions. About noon the handsome silver cup won by Mr Lippiatt was placed in the centre of his collection of apples, and remained there until the close of the exhibition. This cup is really a trophy worth winning, 1 should stimulate the other competitors to renewod efforts next year, Mr It. Peat's heaviest apple woighed 3__ot_s, and is said to bo an extra line specimen of tho variety known aa Allan Bank Seedling; other fruit-growera contend, however, that this fruit is a Gloria Mundi. Some handsome wool mats, given as prizes by Mr Edgar, the dyer, have been hung up at the end of tho room, and add materially to the appearance of tho show. Many strangers, and also old residents of Auckland, were heard expressing surprise that aueh fine fruit aa thoae exhibited could bo produced in the district. This is scarcely to do wondered at, aa, undoubtedly, Mr Lippiat'sprizecollectionofapplesfarexceeds in size and colouring any ovor yot exhibited iv Auckland. It is patent from the apocimeua exhibited that fruit-growers generally are planting far too many midsoason fruiting varieties. This ia to be deplored, aa they are not the niOßt profitable in the lone run. The show will close at 10 o clock this evening.
