The Late Licensing Elections.
(To the Editor.)
Sir, —On adding up tho number of votes recorded in North, South, and East Wards, I was surprisod to find how nearly equal the two parties were supported. The temperance candidates obtained 3,409 votes, und tho opposition 3,401. Temperance candidates secure eight seats on the Bench, and tho opposition seven. If Grafton Ward woro included, it shows twelve seats secured for the temperance and only eight for the opposition, and gives a majority in the four wards of 377 votes in favour of the temperance party. This shows that, notwithstanding the strenuous efforts of "the trade" and abundant outflow of funds to secure their ends, the opposition have little to boast of. I hope those now in power will serve the ratepayers as well as the late Committees ; then there will not bo much to find fault with.—l am, &c.,
