Tho Pacific mail steamer Australia, which arrived from San Francisco thia morning on her farewell trip under the expiring contract, brings an unusually largo and interesting budget of mail news. In order to placo this bofore our readors we issue an extra Supplement with this evening's Star, in addition to our usual large Saturday shoot. This evoning's issue of tho Star consisting of ten pagos or 90 columns of matter, ia the largest news-sheet ever issued in tho Colony at tho prico of one penny.

Sir William is expected to address a public mooting horo in tho tornporance intoronts, and may probably tako up his roaideneo horo. Tho Australia's list of through passengers for Sydney included about CO saloon and GO steerage, and those who wont on board horo. had some difliculty in securing saloon accommodation. Amongst those who bookod here woro Mr and Mrs T. Morrin and Mr G, Holdahip who has boon callod away unexpectedly.
Great complaints have been made in tho various Uovornmont Departments—especially in tho Railway and Polico Departments—that promotion is soldom given to Auckland employes, but that vncancioß aro almost invariably iilled from tho South. This has been represented by more than ono of tho Auckland membors, but a storootypod official reason has boon tho invnriablo roply. During Mr Ballance's stay in Auckland this was again roprenonted to him, with what result remains to bo soon. Wo hopo that careful inquiry will be made, for thero is no doubt that tho belief does exist that tho South has an undue political weight in this matter, and that if tho beliof be unfounded nomo pains should be taken to dispel it, and to avoid the ill-feeling it must ongondor,

Polico Constablo Dodd, who torved in Auckland a number of yoaru, and subsequently camo in for property in Canada, has married and settled down in Victoria, British Columbia.
A meeting of creditors in tho estate of John O'Brien was hold to-day'at the Official Assignee's office Prosont: Tho dobtor, his solicitor, and Messrs More, Young, Kendall and Stewart, creditors. After somo desultory discussion it was resolvod, on the motion of Mr Stewart, soconded by Mr Young, "That tho creditors presont having heard tho statemont of the Bankrupt, made boforo the Official Assignee, anil having roason to believe that lie has been placed in his presont position by the act of hist son, nnd that ho is an honourable man havo no desire that tho Official Assignee should talto possession of tho littlo furniture and property the bankrupt.has left, and they oxpross it desire on account of himself, his wifo and family, that no opposition should bo oH'crod when ho comes up for his discharge
Tlio time for receiving nominations for tho offico of muyor of tho Borough of Nowniarkot expired today, at noon, at tlio Newmarket Hall. Thero wore only two candidates nominated, viz., Mr VV. -I. Suiter (the presont mayor) and Mr F. O. Clayton. Wo understand, however, that a protest has boon lodged against tho nomina tion of Mr Clayton, owing to his not having complied with clause 11. and secondly with subsection I, of clause 50 of tho regulation of Local b lections Act, 1870.
One of Auckland's old identities, Mr Maurico Kolly, of tho Wade, has just been down to tho city on a visit to his daughter, Mrs Rickotr, of Mount Eden Rond. Mr J. B. Gilfillan, local Secretary for the Now Zealand Industrial Exhibition, is in receipt of tho following telegram, which we publish for general information :—" Awards and medals will bo some little time boforo delivery can take place. An interesting gymnastic display was given last ovening by the All Saints' Athletic Club, assisted by some of the moro proficient of Profoseor Carrollo's pupils. Tho proceeds aro intended to augment tho funds of the Club.
The Strasburg Clock was well attonded this afternoon, and, as usual, commanded great admiration. Tonight will bo the last opportunity for seeing it, and those who have so far "let their chances like sunbeams pass them by" would do well, therefore, to procrastinate no longer.

The match which was on tho tapis between Messrs J. Cosson, of Auckland, and Craig, of Waikato, to run half a mile for a stake and the championship of Auckland, is likely to fall through. The latter's backer's appear to be rather frightened of Cosson, who, we believe, is still open to run anyone for tho championship,
A moet successful Homo Missionary meeting was held in the Newmarket Wesleyan Church on Wednoaday night last. Mr W A. Mc'drthur, of London, gave a thoughtful and able address from the chair. Tho Rev. H. Bull spoko on " The Land We Live In." Tho Roy. Mr Bavin outlinod tho objects of the fund, aud stated the income last year was £2,075. Tho attendance was cxcollont, and ths collection—included a genorouß donation from the Chairman of £10.
The Eight Hours Demonstration Committee met last evening! (. the Working Men's Club. There was a large attendance, and in addition to thoso bodies already represented, the following delegates took their seats:—Messrs Featherston and Maughan (Amalgamated Carpenters and Joiners, Branch No. 401), and Messrs Cowley and Kennedy (Amalgamated Engineers). Mr T. P. Millar was elected Chairman. Mr Featherston, Treasurer, and M. Simpson was re-elected Secretary. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded to Mr Brown, the retiring Treasurer, who has held that office for the past three years, but bad been compelled to decline acceptance of the position for a fourth term, owing to other engagements. Some general business was then gone thrqugh, after which the meeting adjourned until next Thursday, at 7.30 p.m.

A meeting of the Mount Hobson Boys' School was hold in the Newmarket Hall on Thursday ovoning, when Mr ,T, M. Lennox, tho Chairman of tho C'ommittoo, tendorod his resignation, owing to being elected a member of tho Board of Education. Tho resignation was accoptod, and a unanimous vote of thanks accorded to Mr Lennox for the painstaking manner he had discharged tho duties of Chairman Mr W. J. Suiter (Mayor of Nowmarkct) was unanimously elected Chairman of the Committee, vice Mr Lennox. Mr Win. Edgerloy, Epsom, was elected member of School Committeo, to (ill the vacancy.
Tho second of the series of grand military promenado concerts takes place in the Drill-shed on Wednesday evening, under tho direction of Herr Carl Sclimitt. A very inticing programme has boon prepared for the occasion.
