Borough of Newmarket.

(To the Editor of the Hveniko Sub )

tJiK,—ln answer to Mr Edwards'aletter— oerhapa he can road aa well aa write. It so, lie has gone about Newinarkot ever since be camo to reside amongßt us with his oyea shut and his ears cloted, or he never would have put hia name to such a lottor. My aim has been progress upwards and onwards, as all my friends know. ifacts speak for themseves—aye, and thoy are stubborn things—and the ratepayers will judge for themselves, aa they invariably do, by placing me at the head of the poll at the election. Sir I feel almost inclined as I write to treat his (MrKdwards'e) letter with contempt. When I was Chairman of the Board in 1881 a great pubHe benefit was conferred by the construction of a new road. I refer to Park Avenue. 60 feet wide—the best we have in the district. The other itemß, auoh as now footpaths, channeling. &c, and substituting blue metal for scoria on the roada, I pass over. What about the railway workshops ia our midst I Is cot that a publio benefit, emplojing hundreds of hands i The Public Hall, and tie Boys' and Girla' Public School: and last, though not least the only place of worship in the district—the Wesleyan Church—allot which were secured when I was Chairman of the several committees, as well aa ot the Koad Board. I should, indeed, be sorry to measure myself by Mr Suiter. My aims are diftcrent to his. I ant not an adventurer. Not here today and gone to-morrow, aa can be seen by my past career. But I have the interest of the distriot—deepest interest, morally, socially, and intellectually—at heart. And on thceo grounds I appeal confidently to the ratepayers of Newmarket. Yours truly, F. G. CLAYTON.
