DEFENCE OF THE COLONIES.
Dunedin, Friday.
It is stated that tho Union Steamship Company have been addressed by both the Victorian Government and the Admiral in charge of the Australian station with a view to tho purchase of the Rotomahana for a fast patrol boat, but as yet no definite arrangements have been come to. A later telegram says :—The statement re the Rotomahana is confirmed. Major Cantley in the South, Timaru, this day. Major Cautley spent about three hours yesterday, and visited Patiti Point with the object of reporting on the defence of tho port. Oamaru, this day. Major Cautloy visited tho town yesterday for the purpose of inspecting tho place for tho purposes of defence His opinion was unfavourable to placing tho town in a state of defence with the means at disposal. It would bo hotter to allow tho enemy to tako what they could than resist without boing able to defend themselvco. The Defence of Dunedin. Dunedin, yesterday. The Publio Works Department have 70 men at work, and will have one gun in position by Thuroduy next. Defence of Wellington. Wellington, this day. Lieutenant Douglas, Naval Staff Officer, has presented to tho Governor a report on the defences of Wellington Harbour. The report is of a confidential nature.
