His government has beon ono which conforrod groat benefits upon the common pooplo, and tho country hai prosporod. Tho territory ho proposod to federate, comprising tho republics of Honduras, Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Guatemala, formed ono republic whon tho separation from Mexico took place, but they uftorwarda broko up through interval jealousies. It was Barnes's ambition to bring them togethor again under his own dictatorship. Ho had calculated upon tho assistance of the President of Salvador, in whose election ho had warmly interested himself. In this, howover, ho was disappointed, and with all four republics, backod by Mexico, com binod against him, his cause was honolees, His death, which is reported as having occurred in tho recent battle, Jwill, wo prosume, end tho war.
