ROBBERY AT A BOARDINGHOUSE.

A younu man named Recce, who sometimes assumes tho name of Thomas, was brought up at the Police Court this morning on a cliargo of stealing a deposit receipt for £ISO odd, one gold watch, ono silver watch, one gold albert, two silver watch chains, two gold rings, and knife-pencil case enclosed in a cash-box, value ±'210. Recce was a prominent member of the Salvation Army, and regarded by that body of Christian people as a young man (19) of sterling qualities of character. He lodged at the boarding-house of Mr Lennard, in Yincent-strect, and the box and its valuable contents wero the property of Mr Edward Lyons, a stonemason, also a lodger. Mr Lyons kept his cash-box in his bedroom, and last night, on going to his room, ho discovered that an intruder had been thero, knocked out the bottom of the box, stolen the contents, and loft tho broken box under the bod. Mr Lyons at once communicated with the police, stating his suspicions, and Detective Hughes arrested Recce on the charge. Tho whole of tho property has been recovered. The detective recognised the prisoner as the person who .received a month's imprisonment somo months ago as a stowaway from Sydney on board the s.s. Ringarooma. The prisoner, an innocentlooking young fellow7, ploaded not guilty, and was remanded until Monday next, whon the police will bo fully prepared to proceed with the case.
