PETTY LARCENIES.
Nujiebous pettty larcenies of an aggravating character are reported from the suburbs.' Several cases are reported of men prowling about in the vicinity of lonely tenements at unholy hours of the night, to the extreme alarm of femaleresidents. Twoorthreeladies in Ponsonby are reported to have left the family washing out during the night, only to discover in the morning that every garment had mysteriously disappeared. Other acts of petty pilfering have been reported to us, while a robbery of a still more serious nature was perpetrated yesterday. During tho progress of the sale at Mr Knight's house in Newton, a valuable gold watch was stolen from tho pocket of a lady who was standing amongst the crowd with tho object of bidding. So skilfully was it removed that the wearer had no knowledge of her loss until it was too late to trace tho thief. The matter has been placed in tho hands of tho polico, and it is to be hoped that more ■will soon bo heard of it. There are reasons •to boliovo that thoso larcenies are carried out by a well-organised gang.
