Admission to City Schools. —Mr Cooper moved, in accordance with notice :—That the Committee for the Auckland City School District bo requested to notify that from and after the expiration of the present year no children residing .outsido the city school di3trlot oan be admitted into the city schools, and that those children now attsnding the said city schools must, from and after the expiration of the prosent year, be excluded from further attendance, it appearing that their attendance has heretofore resulted in the exclusion from the said schools of children residing within the school district. Ho said that the intention of the Legislature in passing the Education Act was that the children of each district should attend the school established within its limits, and in consequence of this intention not being carried into practice, some of the schools were overcrowded, while .others were insufficiently attended. From a return recently s.ibmitted to the Board, it hod been shewn that the following numbers of children residing ontside the city limits attended the c% schools, viz. Wellesley.-street, 163; Boresford-streeJ, 265; Nelson-street, 2b; while 210 children attended the Newton East School who resfded outsido the Newton Schoo\ District. Of the 163 children attending the Wellesleystreet school, who resided outside the district, 24 came from Ponsonby, 29 from Parnell 28 from Grafton, 11 from Newlou, 11 from Mount Eden, and 10 from the North Shore, and as there was abundant room at tho Grafton and farneU schools for more children, the children from those districts attending Wollesley-streot should b.e obliged to attend their proper schools. If tins rule were carr af out, the Wellesley - street School would bo relieved and made Pinnate for the requirements of thWtotrict A different rule would have to apply-to the Bevesford-street, for the overloV there came from Ponsonby. where thOTB was l>o spa*" accommodation Consequently' «> additional school was renmied at Ponsonby. -^ M* Luke nnnosed the resolution, and in doing soTconnnended the letter of Mr Schmidt published In last mgbt* Stae, He moved^as an amendment-" That whenever it Is shown that the average attendance at any sohooi is jn excess, of the aocommoaation of the school bsu ding, tto Committee of such school district shall then be requested to notify until such time, 2 sufficient woommodatlon «» P™^ No children residing outsido the district can be admitted to tliat particular school. tho question was adjourned for legal opinion.
