THEATRE ROYAL.- MR SWALLOW'S CONCERT
Mv MarTIN Swallow pursuant to notico, gayo "a (Jrand Classical I'ianoforto Recital " in the Theatre Hoyal last evening, and his performances, supplemented as they were by contributions from others, made up a very choice concert. The musical public hardly need to bo informed that Mr Swallow's execution of the pianoforte morccaujA was exquisitely fine, while they had been very happily selected. Beethoven's Grand Sonata in F minor (Op. 2, No. 1), comprising allegro, adagio, minuotto, trio, and prestissimo, was the initial number, and it was interpreted with superb otfect. Chopin's Nocturne hi F minor (Op. 50, No. 1), and a l'olacca in E flat minor (Op. 2(i, No. 2), followed, received full justice, tho characteristic charms of the composer's .stylo being very effectively brought out, while Thalberg's Grand Concerto on "La Sounambula" (Op. 4(i) fairly brought down tho house. It was a very taking item. The second part of the programme consisted of operatic selections by Mrs Cooper and Messrs Kusaell and Jackson, Mr Swallow supplying tho pianoforte accompaniments. Although the humidity of the weather had affected to a slight extent tho singers' voices, they acquitted themselves in a highly creditable manner, for tho character of tho music was florid, and on that account trying. The beautiful duet from "Lucia," "11 pnl'or funesto," was rondorotl by Sirs Cooper and Mr Russell, and tho lady also gave the dillicult but expressiTo Scena from " Frcischutsc," "Softly Sighs the Voico of Evening," while Mr Russell contributed (in Eusjlish) tho Recitative " O Cam Patria," anucavatina, "Otu, Palermo." Mr Jackson displayed his proficiency as a clarinettist by executing Angolini's fantasia, " Vespri Siclliani, The Sicilian Vespers," and a concerto by Bassi on airs from " Kigolotto." Mr Swallow announced that in consequence of the meugro attendance tho concert would bo repeated shortly.
