WRECK OF THE BARQ UE STAG.
Captain McCabe's Statement.
Captain McOaiie, j a te master of the barque Stag lost off Tasmauia on August Ist, was a passenger by the Loongana, whicli ar:ived ftom Hobart to-day. lie has furnished us with particalars of the wreck, as follows:—Tho Stag left Whangaroa on June Oth, bound for Melbourne with a full cargo of sawn and baulk timber, a quantity of the latter being deck cargo. A succession of severe gules were experienced until Augu»t Ist, during the prevalence ot which a lot of sails wero lost. At 10 p.m. on tbe latter date, the wind being .rom the westward, the barque wa9 driven ashore, by force of a strong current which was running, on Yancettarn Shoal, to the eastward of Flinders Island, in tbe lieneaux group. All efforts made by the crew failed to get her off, and she humped heavily until about 2 o'clock on the following morning. By this time the vessel had evidently sustained serious damage, for she was leaking very much, and < 'aptaia MeCabe did not consider it safe to remain longor ou boarJ. The boats were accordingly launched, and all bauds left the veE.se!,bouud lorLaunce^ton, about 120 miles distant. Moderate andfreeh southerly winds were experienced for live days, at the expiration of which tiny they were picked up by the s.s, Avon near tungarooma, and landed at Launceston on the following day. The barque Stag remained ashore until Friday night, tbe 4th inst., when she floated off, and after drifting about forborne time iv a water-logged condition, " was picked up by some men from Flinders Uland. Author was let go close to the shore, but failed to bring the vessel up, and she drove up on tbe beach at tbe S.E, end of Flinders Island. She was then abandoned. 'I he wrrck (ship, boats, and cargo) was sold by auction at Launccston subsequently, realising £114, Air Gunn being the purchaser. An enquiry into the loss of tbe Stag was held at Launceston on arrival there of Captain McCabe and crew, the result of which has already been received by telegraph and published in the Star of Wednesday, the 23rd inst.
