CITY COU NCIL DEPUTATION.

A deputation consisting of Messrs J. M, Clark (Mayor), Councillors Waddel, Homus. Offer, Aickin and Goldie, Mr Philips (Town Clerk), W. Anderson (City Surveyor), aud Mr Woolficld (Inspector of Abattoirs), with respect to various municipal requirements. The first matter submitted was the extension of tbe main sewer. The Maypr said tho cost would be £1500, aud ho asked a contribution of £900,

Mr HaU said ho would sco about tho matter, but was not hopeful with regard to to it.

With reference to the. removal of the Armoury the Premier referred tho deputation to Mr Bryce.

THE RECLAMATION,

The Mayor next broached the subject of the reclamation. Ho reminded thePremicrof his promise to the Chamber of Commerce deputation, to pay for earth deposited in the harbour, for the purpose of reclamation, and in tbis connection, 4_e said that tbe Conncil bad a number of streets to cut down to their proper levels, which could be attended to at once if a satisfactory price could bo obtained for the earth, but which, under other circumstances, -would not bo touched for years. Then thoy wanted further to know for what period the arrangement could be made, Mr Whitaker replied tbat ho was prepared to pay same price for it as would be given other contractors. Every facility would be afforded tbe Council in the matter.

The Mayor considered that 50,000 or 60,000 yards of earth could he supplied. On the question of Stanley-street which was introduced, Mr Whitaker said that both in law and reason the Government waa entitled to contribute to the work and the only difficulty should be in determining what that contribution should be.

The Mayor then suggested an amendment iv tho Health Act by which the Councils of Boroughs should be allowed to inspect drains, not only within their own limits, hut also the dairies whence the milk supplies ot their constituents were derived

Mr Whitaker promised the matter should receive attention.

The deputation then withdrew,
