RISE IN WHAUtf. Whaus have gone up to 50a, since the reports of a splendid show in the breaking d°WUi A COTTAGE BURNED. A fire occurred yesterday at the house of Mr Thos. Aitken, Mary-street. Mr Aitken is dispenser at the Hospital, and on Saturday night he and his wife slept at the Hospital, leaving tlie house unattended. The fire was observed about s-ix a.m. About £25 worth of furniture was saved, but the house is almost totally demolished. The fire was confined to thu building. Tbe case against the natives for forcibly entering the Oiiinemutu Hotel and ejecting Mis Robertson, was concluded to-day. No material evidence was brouuht forward. The Bench iv dismissing the case said " while we think there is a strange proba bility that these natives instigated the violence, we do not think that such proof has been brought forward as would warrant us in convicting them." An information was sworn to-day by Mrs Robertson charging the two bailifls with ejecting her with violence. The case will be heard on Monday ; also the case against J. Wilson, at t.he suit of a native, for firing a loaded gun at him. The great mortality among the fish on this coast is increasing. Hundreds are lying along the Maketu beach and many have nKo boen seen at the entrance of this harbour.

Wilson, chairman of the Road Board Conference, stating the reason £8,000, the balance from a sum due the Canterbury Road Boards, has not been paid, is because the Waimate County Council claims a larger share than hitherto allotted. INVERCARGILL, this day. A slight shock of earthquake was felt on Saturday morning, the direction being from north to south.
