THE REV. MR. WEBB AND THE TOTAL ABSTINENCE SOCIETY.

(To the Editor.)

Sih,—sfour issue of la»t night announces the (act of the resignation of my membership with the Total Abstinence Society, and gives as a reason. " he could no longer sit with a man who could challenge ministers of tho Gospel to what he Iconsidered absurdities, viz., Spiritualism." My, letter gave no such absurd reason as that alleged. If a man chose to chal'enge every day of the week I have no objections, no matter whkt subject. lam willing to unite with men of any class or creed, h jwever strongly marked their opiniong may be, to seek relief from any tyranny, social or moral. But if the Roman Oatholio is to seize the opportunity of such united action for advocating Papal claims—the Baptist for ventilating the question of immersion andtheFree-thinkerforchailengingtheorthodox —there is a breach of the agreement underlying such cooperation. If the platform of tho Society is to be made the place to sutaerve religious, or anti-religi"us, interests, or any other, save total abstinence, ' I hayo simply misunderstood its basin, arid as I am unwilling to compromise myself by identifying myself with it when used, as I believe it was, for the dishonour of God and His truth, I simply wish to resign my connection with it. As I learn that my resignation haß been accepted, I suppose tho Society thinks differently with me, and we are equally satisfied.— l am, Allan W. Webb. December 10th, 1879. [Mr Webb appears to be under a misapprohension. His resignation wa3 not accepted.—Bd,
