An outbreak of lire took place yesterday, which threatened at one time the destruction of Mount Cook prison. A cauldron of pitch, which was being boiled in a shoemaker's shop just outside the stockade, was upset, and in a moment the place was in flames. They were fortunately extinguished without much dilliculty. IMMIGRANTS.
The ship Wairoa, which left London for this port in July, brings 210 passengers, viz., 20 saloon, 30 .second cabin, mid 160 steerage. Nearly all the steerage passengers arc said to be people who bring out capital, and who intend to take up land and settle in Wellington district. WATERWORKS LOAN.
The Finance Committee of the City Council have decided to invite tenders from till the banks for the raising of a new Waterworks Loan of £130,000. INSOLVENCY. Charles Moody, Wellington, engineer, and John Smith, settler, have filed statements that they arc unable to meet their engagements.

E. W. Clarke, an eminent drainage engineer, has written from London to Mr Travcrs, solicitor instructing him to commence such proceedings as he may think fit in connection with the statement made by Mr Taylor to the effect that Mr Clark was acting as the paid agent of Messrs Doulton and Co.. manufacturers of drainage pipes. Messrs Doulton and Co. deny there is the slightest truth in the allogatiou. Henry Lovering, steward of the Albion. was brought up this morning charged with embezzling £2 -Is 9d. He was discharged.

SEARCH FOR BODIES.
A party of 30 to -10 men still continue at work tuunelling iv the snow for Smith's and Morrison's bodies, but so far without success. The work is one of much dancer. Cleared: Pelhatu, barque, for Melbourne, with produce, THE GRAIN MARKET, Iho grain market continues quiet. Some parcels of milling wheat have been bought at 4s, but merchants do not quote higher than 3s lOd for large-sized parcels ; oats, Is O'd to Is KM not enquired for ; barley, nothing doing. The weather is very favourable for vouns crops. LOSS OF SdEEP THIS WINTER. So fur it is known that fully 5,000 sheep have been lost in Melvenxie country, but the number will eventually prove much larger.
