ALARMS OF FIRE.
Two alarms of fire, each within a few moments of each other, were rung out yesterday forenoon from the Newton fift bell. The cause in the first iustauee was the ignition of soot iu,the chimney of the shop occupied by a hair dresser named Austen. The meriibarw of tlie'NeWton Fire Brigade inu6. tered largely:under Superintendent Maho'n arid extinguished the flames. The second alarm was aiso caused-bya chimney on fire, but in tliis i pase there was .considerable danger of the house being burnt. The house is a* two-storied onfe, occupied by Mr Beale. The Newton Brigade was quickly on .the-poly'brit', having no appliiiuccs, they .experienced some clifficultyin getting on the 'roof of the house. This- was however acCOhipljsljqd,. ajid.it, was then, found that the. bricks were reddiot, A judicious application of water had the effect of extinguishing the flames, but so fierce was the blaze that fully ___U hour .lapsed bdfoi'e it Was put out. The woodwork near to the bricks was very hot, and there Can be little doiibt that tlie building had a very narrow escape.
