The Evening Star: WITH WHICH ARE INCORPORATED The Evening News, The Morning News and The Echo.

MONDAY, JANUARY 27, 1879.

For the cause that lacks assistance, For the wrong that needs resistance, For the future in the distance, And the good that we can do.

The half-holiday movement has, we are glad to learn, not been entirely abandoned. The gentlemen who are exerting themselves for the remission of the hours of toil arc certainly not easily discouraged by adverse circumstances, and their eiForts are deserving of success. Failing to secure a half-holiday on Saturdaj s, they arc now endcrvouving to obtain the same concession on Wednesdays, and ■with this view are getting signatures to a memorial on the subject. Several drapers have already signed, and good progress has already been made. There is one strong argument in favour of the Wednesday half-holiday which is not applicable to Saturday, namely that it will not disarrange the general marketing and shopping business, or reduce the profits of the smaller retail houses.
