(Before R. C. Barstow, Esq., R.M., and A. Clements, Esq., J.P.) HAssault.— Mary Walker was charged with assaulting Emily Gardiner, by dragging her by the hair of the head.—Prosecutor did not appear and the case was dismissed. A Desekter.—William Myas was charged with desertion from H.JVI.S. Dido, at Auckland, on March 9, 1875.—Mr. Pardy said as no men-of-war had yet visited the harbour, he would ask for another remand for eight days.—Remanded accordingly. Gambling in an Hotel.—William Maples was charged with a breach of the Licensing Act, by suffering gambling to go on in his licensed house, the Occidental Hotel.—Defendant pleaded guilty to the charge.—Mr. Sub-Inspector Pardy said the men engaged in gambling on the night in question were all professional gamblers. This system of gambling liad a very bad effect on the young men of the city, and many were being drawn into the vortex of ruin through its pernicious influence. ~ Defendant said he was ignorant of the law on the subject, and he did not gain anything, by the transaction.—His Worship read the section of the Act relating to. gambling in licensed houses, and said that some of these days a more serious penalty would be Assai-lt.—Ah adjourned sitting of the Court was held at noon, when Thomas Hodson was charged with assaulting George Rowlands by striking him on the face with bis clinched net at Epsom on Ist January. Evidence was taken, and the prisoner fined 20s and costa, or In default one months imprisonment, and ordered to be bound over In «20 and two sureties of ■£W£, to keep the peace tor three months.
