taki. The wind, whicn had been blowing very strongly, suddenly chopped round to the westward, and a heavy sea rising, the schooner was driven ashore before the captain had time to prevent it. She became a total wreck on the island, and the passengers and crew were caved. At the time of the occurrence, the Talisman was on the homeward cruise, and had on board a valu able cargo of pearl shell and copra. The schooner Mazeppa,; which was at Karo. tonga on December Ist, was to pro ceed at once to Aitutaki, in order to render any possible assistance. It was expected that she would remain there about two days, and then come on direct to Auckland with Captain Trayte. She may therefore be expected to arrive at any moment. The Talisman was a new schooner, having been built by Messrs Niccol and Sons of the North Shore, and launched on April 13th. : Her dimensions were—Length of keel, 71ft; breadth of beam, 20ft; depth of hold, 8#; and her tonnage 79 tons. She was >uilfc for the island trade, to the order of Captain H. F- Anderson. She left on her present voyage, which was also her maided'one, on ■ May 12th, under command of Captain i Trayte.? INSURANCES. The hull of the Talisman is insured in the Batavia, butthat'Company has reinsured j £500 in the Victoria, and £500 in the • Union, thus reducing the amount of their I responsibility to £500. The South British { Company has an open policy on the return j cargo of the schooner for £2,000, but of this sum £1.000 is reinsured. j
