The Mary Ann Annison from Whangarei, with 22,700 feet timber, arrived at Ly ttelton yesterday.

NAPIER, this day. FATAL ACCIDENT.

Ainost lamentable and fatal accident occurred at noon oa Saturday, opposite the " Daily Telegraph " office. Mr Barry, an old settler, and principal storekeeper at Taradale, called on horseback at the "Telegraph" office. He afterwards attempted to mount his horse, for the purpose of proceeding to the Supreme Court-house to Interview the manager of the paper. When mounting his horse, it took fright, and threw Mr Barry before he was Jfairly seated. He fell on the back of his head, and his skull was completely crushed in. Medical assistance was at once obtained, but of no avail, as he died in great agony two hours after the accident. Deceased was much respected and esteemed. He joined Father Henneberry's teetotal force on that gentleman's visit here, but was always a temperate man, and had built up for himself a small fortune. Mr Barry was an early colonist. He leaves a wife and young family. Shortly after the accident occurred messengers were sent to Mrs Barry, who resides four miles from town, and just as ehe stepped inside the door of the house in which Mr Barry died he breathed his last. ■ An inquest was held this afternoon on the body of a child, which was found, in a chamber p,t the Railway Hotel, Hastings. It was found to be the child of a servant at the hotel, who had arrived by the City of Auckland; it -wa3 found to be still-born. A man named Smith was found dead on Saturday in an out-hous of F&rndon Railway Station. He had been for a lengthened period in Napier Hospital, suffering from a severe internal complaint, to which he has at last succumbed. LIBEL CASH BY MR REES. Mr Rees, member for City Hast. Auckland, has registered a notice of action for ilbel against the -proprietors of the " Daily Telegraph." He claims £3,000 damages. The cause of action is not stated, but it is generally supposed to be a series of articles for the past 12 months, which have brought him Into the contempt of the people of Hawke's Bay, as exhibited by the reception he has met with at two last public meetings. It is rumoured that an attempt will be made to have the case heard at Wellington.

Sir Julius Vogel reports to the Government with regard to the steam service between Eng. land the Colony that Denny and Galbraith have made certain proposals but their plans were not ready when the mail left. Messrs Green will also make an offer, and Anderson and Anderson, the founders of the Orient line, will make proposals. One of the brothers Anderson is now in Melbourne, and it is thought to be very possible that he will come over and consult the Government at an early date on the subject. CHRISTCHURCH, this day. GREAT KEROSENE FIRE. The kerosene bond of Twentyman and Fousin was completely destroyed by fire last evening. It contained between 300 and 400 cases of kerosene. The origin is unknown, but is supposed to be through boys smoking near the shed. There are no insurances. There was a steady rain-fall on Saturday^ and part of yesterday, which will do much good to the country generally. ; • A woman named Matilda Thompson was taken to the Hospital on Saturday night, as it was supposed she had poisoned herself, it was then found out that she had only taken a dose of aniseed to frighten her husband.
